What audit readiness actually means

Audit readiness is not a folder of policies or a certificate on the wall. It is the ability to produce evidence, on demand, that your business does what it says it does. In civil construction, utilities, mining and transport, that means the records on site match the procedures in the office, and the people doing the work can show they followed them. The single most common finding in contractor audits is the gap between documented process and lived practice - the procedure says one thing, but the dockets, photos and timesheets tell another story. Closing that gap is what audit readiness is really about. It is less paperwork and more proof.

What auditors look at first

Auditors start with what they can see and test quickly. Can you pull an ITP, a set of test results or a docket for any current job within a day? Are your non-conformance reports closed out with real root cause and evidence, or just a note that someone was "retrained"? Is subcontractor verification ongoing - insurances, licences and inductions tracked as they expire - or is it only checked once at prequalification and then forgotten? Do management reviews happen on schedule, with actions tracked to closure, or do they slip when work gets busy? These are the questions that separate a business that looks ready from one that actually is. The good news is that each one is fixable with a clear process and a single owner.

What to do if your score was low

A low score is not a verdict - it is a map. Most contractors have some gaps; the ones that pass audits are the ones that fix them in the right order. Start with the highest-risk evidence gaps first: the records a principal or auditor would ask for tomorrow, the NCRs that are still open, and the subcontractor credentials that have expired. Then fix the system that let those gaps open in the first place, so they do not come back.
